AI-Powered Attorney Matching for D.C. Bar’s 10,000+ Members

July 10, 2026 | Andrew Lawlor

D.C. Bar, the nation’s largest unified bar association, needed a modern Lawyer Referral Service (LRS). The core challenge was connecting clients with the right attorneys efficiently. Aptaria built an AI-powered, Salesforce-native LRS and connected it to D.C. Bar’s existing systems, helping the Bar launch an intelligent, efficient, and accurate client-attorney matching process.

For associations, engaging and retaining members is a primary driver of long-term growth.

But a challenge that often gets overlooked is just as important: connecting members’ expertise with the people who need it — in other words, referrals.

Associations that struggle to deliver fast, accurate referrals typically rely on complex, manual, and slow search processes built on large volumes of data.

That complexity makes it hard for potential clients to find the right expert or professional for their situation.

This was precisely the challenge facing D.C. Bar, the country’s largest unified bar association, on behalf of its 10,000+ members.

The issue: unlike many other bar associations, D.C. Bar had no lawyer referral system at all.

For Aptaria, that gap was an opening — a chance to help D.C. Bar build a self-serve, AI-driven LRS unlike anything another bar association had built before.

Opportunity: Building a Smarter AI Referral System

Even with a well-established Salesforce foundation, D.C. Bar struggled to connect clients with the right legal representation.

With other bar associations already offering referral services, D.C. Bar wanted a solution that would go further than what already existed.

  • Streamline access to justice: let clients describe their legal issue in plain language and use AI to surface the right attorneys through an improved search experience
  • Protect client data: apply strict safeguards to preserve client confidentiality and keep information security standards high across every interaction
  • Stay easy to maintain: design the system so it could be updated without heavy technical expertise or constant developer involvement

D.C. Bar wanted an LRS that would save attorneys time on self-promotion and client acquisition, put niche expertise in front of the members who need it, and learn from historical data to keep improving its referrals.

Solution: Giving D.C. Bar an AI Referral System (ARM)

Aptaria custom-built an AI Referral and Matching (ARM) system for D.C. Bar, making it the first bar association to launch an AI-led LRS.

The ARM system is Aptaria's client-member matching and referral system that can integrate with your existing CRM or AMS to support quick and accurate referrals. ARM is founded on an OpenAI model that uses natural language processing (NLP) to match clients and association members effectively.

The resulting referral portal lets clients submit requests while giving attorneys a way to manage their profiles and review their matches.

With ARM, associations can put their members’ expertise in front of anyone looking for it, without the manual searching, slow turnaround, and inaccurate results that come with older approaches.

Salesforce Experience Cloud

D.C. Bar’s ARM system runs on a user-friendly portal for clients and attorneys, built on Lightning Web Runtime for scalability and performance.

The result is a system that’s fast, secure, and able to scale easily, giving both clients and attorneys a straightforward way to get what they need.

OpenAI Model Integration

ARM uses AI to understand what clients are looking for and what skills attorneys bring, then compares the two to find the right match.

Technically, natural language processing (NLP) turns client requests and attorney profiles into vectors, compares them for semantic similarity, and produces accurate matches without storing sensitive data.

Vector Database Implementation

The AI evaluates how closely a client’s needs align with an attorney’s profile and returns a percentage score reflecting match quality.

The higher that score, the more likely an attorney’s expertise fits what the client is looking for.

Attorneys can improve their match odds by adding more detail to their profiles.

Data-Driven Architecture

The system was built for easy future changes using custom settings, custom metadata types, custom labels, and email templates.

In practice, that means updates don’t require developer intervention every time — saving time and removing bottlenecks when changes are needed.

Secure Client Interaction

Clients can use the portal without logging in, while CAPTCHA and email verification keep bots from submitting fake requests.

Just as important, the system never stores sensitive client details or shares client contact information with attorneys.

Attorney Profile Management

Attorneys get Salesforce Customer Community Plus licenses for managing profiles and reviewing matches.

They can also log in through single sign-on (SSO) via D.C. Bar’s existing portal, adding convenience and an extra layer of security.
